About 50 years ago, Atlanta developers started to reshape a farming community on the northern outskirts of the city into a commercial district. The opening of Perimeter Mall triggered the rise of Perimeter Center, now split between Dunwoody, Sandy Springs and Brookhaven. Real estate firms spent decades filling the area with office buildings, shopping centers, apartments and hotels. Today, it's one of the largest office hubs in the Southeast. Perimeter Center is poised to grow, but the scarcity of untouched land will require future buildings to rise on asphalt.
